Oral vs nasal breathing
Oral breathing can be a cause of sleep-disordered breathing. Breathing through the mouth can cause unwanted tooth development for a child. In adults, SDB can cause tooth and dentition defects, which means the tongue often gets stuck in the lower jaw, restricting airflow during sleep. That’s why it’s important to learn to breathe correctly through your nose. The aid keeps the lower jaw in a normal position at the front and the tongue more elevated, so the airway is open and breathing is free through the nose.

The Myosa® for TMJBDS® S3 is used in the third and final stage of treatment, when the patient’s Breath Hold Time (BHT) has reached 45 seconds or more. The S3 is primarily designed to finalise the establishment of nasal breathing, while improving breathing and myofunctional disorders. The S3 can also serve as a transition appliance between the first and second phase of TMJBDS® treatment, involving arch development in combination with the Myobrace® appliances. It is for this reason that the S3 is a derivative of the Myobrace®A1 appliance. The design features of the S3 establish and maintain nasal breathing while improving myofunctional disorders in the final stages of TMJBDS® treatment. The Myosa® appliance is to be used for one to two hours each day, plus overnight while sleeping. The patient’s teeth may become slightly sensitive in the early stages of treatment. This is quite normal, however, if pain becomes excessive, decrease application time with the aim to build it back up once the appliance is accustomed to and sensitivity subsides. The Myosa® appliance may change the position of the teeth and jaws, though the flexibility of the appliance minimizes this potential.

Cleaning the Myosa S3

The Myosa® appliance should be cleaned under warm running water every time the patient removes it from their mouth.

Use Myoclean™ tablets to thoroughly clean twice a week. Myoclean™ is the recommended cleaning agent for all MRC appliances.
